A low-rise mega shopping mall in a vertical city is a rare scene. Spreading along Canton Road and taking up a space of 2 million square feet in Tsim Sha Tsui - the golden hub of entertainment, Harbour City is the largest ultimate destination for all the fashionistas and shopaholics, where the world’s famous glittering harbour meets a wide array of luxury and apparel brands. Nobody blames you if you get lost in the giant complex but try your best to stop by one of the buildings that extend from the shore westwards – the Ocean Terminal, as the area contains much more than its panoramic harbour view.
The rebuilt pier is currently servicing cruise ships with top-notch facilities and serves as a living witness of Hong Kong’s transition to the world’s cargo hub. Its establishment story dates back to the 1880s. Sir Paul Chater founded his wharf and godown company with Jardine Matheson after he successfully purchased land on the western seashore of the Kowloon peninsula. Not only did he transform the shipping business of the port entirely, but he also transport thousands of people to their destination by water, one of whom was the Hong Kong legendary Bruce Lee.
Little do you know Lee’s connection with the Ocean Terminal. He got on the cruise that docked at the old wharf pier heading to the US for overseas study; he also got some photographs of himself taken for the film studio Golden Harvest. If you want to curate your own experiences of Bruce Lee’s fly-kicking moments that happened there, make your way to the rooftop of its car park! Don’t forget to embrace the 270-degree city skyline as well!
