Looking for an adventure while in Hong Kong? Why not hike around Stanley to experience the southern waters to the fullest? Spend just 1.5 hours and find the Rhino Rock perched on the hillside of Che Pau Teng (斜炮頂)! As wild as a rhino sounds, the 1.5km short hike can be quite challenging and ambiguous to less experienced hikers. However, the ocean view along the way is undoubtedly worth all the big steps and climbing.
To reach the starting point of the trail, head south and walk along Wong Ma Kok Road until it ends, or take bus no.14 and get off at Stanley Fort (starting point of the trail). There, you'll find a stairway on the side of the entrance of the Stanley Barracks.
The start of the trail is easy-peasy, walking up stone steps and concrete pathways, but it gets much more difficult after reaching the peak where a radar station stands.
A small trail leads you down the hill, but the path can be hard to follow. It takes around 25 minutes to get to the rhino rock from the peak, so one suggestion is to stay right and keep going down. You'll often have to walk on narrow and rugged paths with bushes and climb over huge boulders, so be careful with the loose stones!
Once you reach the Rhino Rock, you'll be rewarded with a perfect scenery of the southern ocean accompanied by Mr. Rhino! The tip of the rock resembles a rhino horn, and some hikers even dare to ride on it to overlook Stanley Prison and capture the best pictures for Instagram. However, don't forget that safety comes first.
One thing to keep in mind is that there is no shade at all on the way down the hill after the peak, so bring your sun-protection essentials. The way back to the starting point is the same, and there's bus no.14 that takes you to Stanley Village if you plan to hang around longer or all the way to Sai Wan Ho.
