Nestled among an array of shops in Stanley's roundabout, the acclaimed Dai Pai Dong Si Yik uncovers a concealed past. Today, Stanley exudes a romantic, western ambiance, but it was once a bustling squatter village. Due to the demolition of squatter homes and ongoing development, the owners have had to relocate their food stall several times, even losing their homes in the process. Despite their reluctance to change, Si Yik has managed to maintain its authenticity.
Although Si Yik may not top the list of tourist-friendly eateries—it lacks air conditioning, offers cramped seating, features a non-English menu, and has reticent owners—its hallmark dish, Hong Kong-style Kaya French Toast (咖央西多士), persistently attracts patrons. This dish is fluffier than its counterparts, thanks to the painstaking process of separating egg whites and yolks to create a cloud-like batter that envelops the bread. For the delectable Kaya flavor, duck eggs are used to create the traditional Malaysian jam, which is nestled between slices of golden bread and topped with a generous pat of butter, resulting in a burst of sweetness. Paired with a cup of milk tea, it makes for an indulgent brunch treat.
To experience the best local French Toast in town, make Si Yik the first stop on your Stanley day trip. The stall is open daily until 1:30 pm, but closed on Tuesdays.
