Love it or hate it, you are not going to miss this spot. You just can’t.
Located at one end of the goldfish market, this street food shop named Delicious Food makes itself present to anyone with a functioning nose. In fact, its signature stinky tofu has been drawing people from across the street, or even outside the district. Cover your nose as you may, but you just can’t unsee the crowd waiting outside the shop to satisfy their craving for a strong sensation.
But what exactly is stinky tofu anyway?
It’s tofu blocks deep-fried after fermented in “special marinade” (usually for days). The Fermentation breaks down the protein of the tofu, creating an extra fine and smooth texture while releasing more flavour. So it is pretty much the ultimate example of “crispy on the outside, soft on the inside”.
Besides stinky tofu, Delicious Food is equally famous for another local delicacy: deep-fried pork intestine. Layers of pork intestine wrapped on top of one another, deep-fried until all crispy, chopped into thick slices and skewered.
As for the smell, many call it disgusting but, similar to durian, stinky tofu fans would all go by the same motto: The smellier, the better. And this is exactly why Delicious Food claims its champion title in the game. The shop used to cook up some stink-atomic bombs that blew the blocks away. The authority was concerned and tried to stop their business. But the shop managed to stay discretion for the public- tuning down the attitude of the stinky tofu.
What remains though is their setting where you can find a row of sauces at the counter. Fermented bean chilli sauce and sour chilli sauce for stinky tofu, yellow mustard for pork intestine, and sweet sauce for both. Mix and match, be greedy, and eat sticking your butt out, or you will get your shoes seasoned too.
