HONG KONG'S DRINKING CULTURE
A COMBINATION OF TRADITIONAL PRACTICES AND MODERN INFLUENCES

Hong Kong's drinking culture reflects a combination of traditional practices and modern influences. When visiting local bars in Hong Kong, you'll likely encounter some unique aspects of the city's drinking culture:

Dice Games

Liar's Dice (大話骰) is a popular dice game often played in bars in Hong Kong. It involves guessing the number of a certain face across all players' concealed dice. Each player shakes a cup containing five dice and peeks at their own dice while keeping them hidden from others. Players then take turns making escalating bids on the total number of a certain dice face present in all cups, with the option to challenge previous bids if they believe a lie has been made. The loser of a round typically drinks.

Card Games

Various card games are also adapted for drinking in Hong Kong. A common one is "Dai Pai Dong" (大排檔), which is very similar to "Ring On Fire". The card drawn corresponds to a specific rule, which usually leads to someone taking a drink.

Karaoke

Karaoke is a beloved pastime in Hong Kong, and it often involves drinking games. Friends may challenge one another to sing specific songs or hit certain notes, and if they fail to meet the challenge, they must take a drink.

Beer Buckets

To cater to groups and promote sharing, many bars offer beer buckets (usually six beers for around HKD 180) – an affordable way to enjoy a cold brew with friends.

One more thing to add about beer is the all-time favorite game - beer pong. Although it is not originated from Hong Kong, beer pong has become increasingly popular among young crowds. It involves throwing ping-pong balls into cups of beer. If the ball lands in a cup, the other team must drink the contents.

"Bargirls" or "Boxers"

If you're fortunate, you might come across a "bargirl", called "boxers" (拳手) in Cantonese. It has nothing to do with the sport of boxing. Many bars would hire young women to accompany guests in playing finger-guessing games and drinking for entertainment. While not always present, their appearance adds to the authentic atmosphere of local Hong Kong bars.
