In Hong Kong, a visit to the internationally renowned Tian Tan Buddha promises serenity and spiritual upliftment. However, many visitors may not be aware of the nearby "Wisdom Path," a short trail offering an additional layer of tranquility.
The Wisdom Path is an expansive outdoor wood inscription located on a natural slope at the base of Lantau Peak. This installation features the "Heart Sutra (心經)" carved into its surface, showcasing the exquisite calligraphy of Professor Jao Tsung-I (饒宗頤), a celebrated master of arts. Comprising thirty-eight timber columns arranged in the shape of an infinity symbol (∞), the path represents the perpetual growth of life and beings. The tallest column has been intentionally left blank, signifying the core philosophy of the Heart Sutra – the absence of hindrance in emptiness.
Constructed over a three-year period, the government strived to maintain harmony with nature throughout the process. With ongoing, meticulous preservation, this exceptional work is expected to endure for a century. The act of carving calligraphy into wooden columns harkens back to ancient times when artists wrote on bamboo tiles, honoring yet another traditional art form.
Regardless of your personal beliefs, the tranquil atmosphere of the Wisdom Path can be appreciated by all as you stroll through the sutra inscriptions, enveloped by the quiet embrace of nature and the mountain's presence. It is advised to take your time while exploring the path, and be sure to stay hydrated during summer visits or bundled up during the winter season.
