NGONG PING 360 RESCUE TRAIL
A GUIDE FOR ADVENTUROUS HIKERS TO BIG BUDDHA

Imagine hiking a tricky trail with cable cars constantly traveling above your head. As you tackle the distance in heat and sweat, passengers from above sit back and enjoy the panoramic views of the hills. Why would anyone choose to do that?

No pain, no gain

An argument that proves persuasive is the enduring adage: no pain, no gain. The 8km Ngong Ping 360 Rescue Trail may sound modest, but its bumpy and winding path tells a different story. Expect robust challenges, such as continuous climbing of long stairways with minimal shade. Yet, the reward is a breathtaking panoramic view – a sight that makes every bit of the effort worth it.

An easier way up

Understandably, the trail's demanding nature may not be for everyone. There's the option to enjoy the same spectacular scenery by hiking downhill from Ngong Ping Village. This approach is considerably easier, but preparation remains key. Ensure a supply of water or make a stop at a convenience store before starting. This journey begins next to the Cable car station, marked by a sign for Lantau Trail Stage 4.

Initiate the hike by following the path of the cable. With a glance at the Big Buddha fading from view, a 15-minute walk leads to another sign – this one for Nei Lak Shan (彌勒山) Country Trail. The massive cable tower indicates completion of a third of the trail. The journey continues, with friendly greetings exchanged with other adventurous hikers.

A Challenging Stage

The route quickly leads to the most daunting part of the trail, aptly named Stairways to Heaven. Photographs capture this sight – long, narrow stairs undulating like a magnificent dragon. Care is required on these zigzag stairs. The distraction of planes landing or cable cars soaring overhead can be exciting, but safety remains paramount.

Conquering the Final Stretch

Having traversed the challenging stairways, there is only one way – downhill. At this point, more than 3 hours of hiking might have elapsed. A well-deserved rest at the last cable tower prepares for the final part of the trail. This last stretch may not have any special highlights, but following the stone stairs leads right back into town. This is a testament to a journey well conquered, with an unforgettable story to tell.
