Nestled in a tranquil corner of Sai Kung, Ham Tin Wan (鹹田灣) offers a picturesque beach, stunning views of Sharp Peak, and mouth-watering food. As a midpoint of MacLehose Trail Stage 2, it's an ideal place to take a break and recharge with some delicious snacks. One must-try is the silky smooth tofu pudding, made with fresh water and served with sugar. If you're feeling hot, cool off with a refreshing red bean slushie.
While the surrounding area may appear desolate, scattered with dilapidated houses and little else besides the beach, in reality, this was once a bustling fishing village called Wan (溫家村), with over 700 inhabitants more than three centuries ago. Its history dates back even further than that of Hong Kong itself. However, in 1962, the village's only pier was destroyed by Typhoon Wanda, leading the younger generation to move away due to transportation difficulties. Since then, only the elders and the shore have remained.
Ham Tin Wan, the official campsite, offers a tranquil getaway as it faces the South China Sea and is embraced by the scarcely-climbed Sharp Peak. Unpolluted and unspoiled, it's perfect for swimming during the day and stargazing at night. For those who seek complete solitude, there are two more remote beaches nearby named Tung Wan and Tai Wan that are definitely worth a visit.
