At a small corner of Tin Hau stands a small dessert place named “Stand By You”. Stepping in the store, you will find its interior reflecting the owner’s strong sense of belonging to his city, from the wallpaper of the old Hong Kong and tables decorated with mosaic tiles, as he used to be a designer before being his own boss. Known for its specially-handcrafted local desserts, it is usually packed with people from dinner time onwards but no worries, you are always guaranteed a seat with a slight wait.
Inspired by the famous Taiwanese dessert “Eight Treasures Herb Jelly” (仙草八寶: $45), they have definitely mastered the classic with their recipe. Filled with 8 different sweetened ingredients, the ooey-gooey dessert bowl offers lots of textures from the jiggly herb jelly, chewy tapioca pearls (boba) and taro balls, elastic nata de coco and soft barley! If you have over-indulged in “heaty” food during your trip, according to Chinese medicine, it is a perfect one to cool you down a bit.
They are also famous for its Crème Brulee series and the Horlick flavoured one ($35) is particularly tempting! Before digging into the gelato-like creaminess, you will have first to crack the caramelized sugar crust with deep desire. The portion is less likely to satisfy the cravings of people with a major sweet tooth though - so why not get two to get yourself in the ultimate Horlicky custard smoothness!
