Experience the awe-inspiring beauty of Hong Kong's longest trail, the MacLehose Trail, beginning with Stage 1. This stage offers a panorama of the stunning High Island Reservoir. The path is mostly flat and made of concrete, making it perfect for hikers of any experience level.
The MacLehose Trail consists of ten stages and covers over 100 kilometers, journeying across the vast expanse of the New Territories, from east to west. Stage 1, the starting point of this grand adventure, is easy to navigate and friendly even to those who prefer driving. This 10.6-kilometer stretch reveals sights of the grand reservoir and remarkable geological formations. Generally, completing this stage takes about two and a half hours.
Begin your journey at Pak Tam Chung Bus Stop, then enter the UNESCO Global Geopark by passing through the gate. When you reach an intersection, keep right, leading towards the High Island Reservoir. An information board provides a helpful map of Stage 1 - consider taking a photo of it to keep you on the right track.
As you continue on the trail, you'll encounter several barbecue sites. Watch for distance pillars every 500 meters to keep track of your progress and confirm you're on the right path. Maclehose Stage 1 should cover post number M001 to M020. After a gentle uphill walk, you'll find a roundabout with a pavilion, an ideal spot for rest before moving on to the right.
Soon, you'll encounter the mesmerizing High Island Reservoir, Hong Kong's largest reservoir, with over 273 million cubic meters of water. A charming tree-lined road guides you for the next 3km towards the West Dam Pavilion. Spotting a large stone marker signals your arrival at West Dam.
The trail ahead provides less shade, so make sure to wear sunscreen, bring an umbrella, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Capture your journey through photos of the beautiful surroundings. At a fork in the road, keep to the left, passing the watersport center.
Keep following the trail straight ahead. When you see a giant breakwater, you've arrived at East Dam. Stage 1 extends slightly further, but we recommend stopping here unless you're ready for the more demanding Stage 2.
East Dam is an exciting destination, home to unique features such as hexagonal rock columns, a sea cave, and a pipe organ-like island. Embark on the MacLehose Trail Stage 1, a journey that promises captivating scenery and memorable adventures.
