Located in Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District, M+ is a captivating destination for tourists that opened in November 2021. It's Asia's pioneering global museum of contemporary visual culture. M+ houses a diverse collection that spans not only Hong Kong but also various corners of Asia and the world. This collection showcases a wide array of visual art forms, including visual art, design, architecture, and moving images.
Designed by the esteemed architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron in collaboration with TFP Farrells and Arup, the M+ edifice boasts an expansive footprint, covering a vast 65,000 square meters and accommodating a total of 33 galleries. Within this architectural marvel, a generous 17,000 square meters are dedicated to exhibition spaces. The majority of these galleries grace the sprawling second-floor podium, offering patrons a seamlessly connected journey through captivating exhibitions.
The tower itself engages in a visual discourse with Hong Kong's urban milieu, boasting a facade adorned in ceramic tiles that gracefully reflect the ever-changing interplay of light and weather. This dynamic tower facade additionally incorporates a state-of-the-art LED system known as the 'M+ Facade,' which showcases the treasures of the M+ Collections alongside specially commissioned masterpieces. As the sun sets, it emerges as a distinctive and enchanting contributor to the city's vibrant night landscape.
Beyond its renowned architecture, M+ introduces pioneering innovations to both its exhibition style and its carefully curated collections. While conventional museums prioritize showcasing, amassing, and analyzing, M+ takes a distinctive approach by fostering creative engagement. It opens up space for the public to actively participate and connect with others, reshaping the landscape of contemporary art from a fresh perspective.
M+ doesn't limit itself to traditional visual arts; it embraces a broad spectrum of visual culture, including elements of popular culture, internet culture, and technology-driven forms of expression. At its core, the M+ Collections celebrate the visual culture of Hong Kong. This comprehensive collection combines architecture sketches, models, graphic designs, industrial products, album covers, posters, video games, and more alongside artworks, all of which collectively accentuate the unique local character and creative spirit.
