The Backstory of the Egg Waffle

The Hong Kong Egg waffle is not the waffle commonly found in other countries. It is a typical Hong Kong street food, made mainly of flour, eggs, milk, and sugar. There are two stories about the origin of the Hong Kong egg waffle, both tracing back to the 1950s in Hong Kong:

Eggs were a luxury item back then. For those who could not afford eggs, they made an egg-shaped mold and filled it with eggless batter.

Shopkeepers made a new product using broken eggs by mixing them into a batter with evaporated milk and flour. Due to the eggy content and eggy shape, people started to name it an egg waffle.

What to look for?

The most typical flavor is the original one. However, with time, and increased competition, egg waffles now come in various flavors and serving styles. Visitors can easily find egg waffles with chocolate chips, matcha, earl grey tea, or even salted egg yolk. Sellers also add innovative elements to the egg waffle, such as serving it with ice cream. Despite these variations, it is recommended to try the original flavor before exploring other options.

A perfect egg waffle should have a crispy exterior and a sponge-like interior. As a common Hong Kong street food, it is not difficult to find an egg waffle place. The two most famous egg waffle shops are Lee Keung Kee and Mammy Pancake. These stores have locations all over Hong Kong.

However, if there is a long line outside these stores, visitors might want to check out other street food shops that offer similar quality without the queue. Many street food stores sell good or even better egg waffles than these brands. The key to a great egg waffle is always asking for a freshly made one, no matter which store is visited.

Apart from egg waffles, Hong Kong-style waffles (格仔餅) are also popular street food. They look similar to the waffles found in other countries, but the toppings are entirely different. Butter, peanut butter, condensed milk, and sugar are added on top of a freshly made hot waffle, giving it a unique taste and texture. It is highly recommended to try it before leaving Hong Kong!

Hong Kong is known as a “food paradise,” and there is much more street food to explore. Egg tarts (蛋撻) and pineapple buns with butter (菠蘿油) are two other must-try items.

When visiting these stores, it is important to have enough cash because they still operate on a cash system to avoid tax.

Enjoy some of the best Hong Kong food and satisfy the hunger!
