Located in Sheung Wan, surrounded by Hollywood Road Street and Shui Hang Hay Street, Hollywood Road Park tells the fascinating story of Hong Kong's history. This place is also known as Possession Point, marking the initial landing of the British navy in Hong Kong. On 26 January, 1841, when the Union Jack Flag was raised, signifying the beginning of a 156-year British colonial rule.
The region's geographical attributes offered strategic advantages. Before establishing a foothold, every military force seeks a suitable location for settling. This district bore the original name "Tai Hang Hau (大坑口)", in line with today's "Shui Hang Hau Street (水坑口街)". Shui Hang Hau, literally translating to "the mouth of a large water pit", refers to water flowing from the Peak into Victoria Harbour. The site's accessibility to the shoreline together with with a panoramic view of Hong Kong's sea-region, made it an ideal spot. The British military divided into teams, white soldiers and Indian soldiers. While the former stationed at Possession Point, the later based nearby at Upper Lascar Row.Following this, the colonial government undertook the construction of Hollywood Road. Although the original barracks were subsequently moved to Central and the site underwent multiple transformations, it serves as an emotive reminder of Hong Kong's roots.
Modern Hollywood Road Park, decorated with traditional Chinese architecture, offers peace in the middle of noise. Historical photographs of the neighborhood displayed around the park transport visitors back in time, enriching the experience for history enthusiasts.
