AVENUE OF STARS
A TRIBUTE TO FILM LEGENDS UNDER THE CITY LIGHTS

If you only have one night to spare, make your way to the Avenue of Stars. Considered as one of Hong Kong's premier attractions, this promenade provides the optimal viewpoint to witness the city's mesmerizing light show.

What are the "stars" on this avenue? These "stars" are not stars in the sky, but rather superstars of Hong Kong. The 440-meter-long pathway was established to honor artists who have dedicated their lives to the advancement of the local film scene. Look out for statues of notable figures such as Bruce Lee, the legendary Kung Fu master, and the endearing McDull, a popular cartoon pig created by local animators. Along the walkway, you'll also find handprints of celebrated personalities who have made significant contributions to showbiz.

In its golden age, spanning from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, Hong Kong films dominated the box office in East Asia and enjoyed a cult reputation in the West. Despite the relatively small size of the city, Hong Kong exported more films than any other country except the United States. The city's iconic stars such as Jackie Chan and John Woo not only rose to fame locally but also successfully transitioned into Hollywood, capturing a global fan base. Others like Chow Yun-fat and Jet Li also seized opportunities to shine on the American silver screen. As film historian David Bordwell remarked, during its pinnacle, Hong Kong produced what could be considered "the world's most dynamic and imaginative popular cinema".

However, with the global expansion of Hollywood films in the 90s and 2000s, many audiences in Hong Kong shifted their preferences towards these big-budget productions. Hollywood movies' high production values, star power, and widespread marketing have often overshadowed local films. With economic factors, the Hong Kong film industry then fall into decline.

Every night at 8 pm, the harbour sets the stage for a spectacle named "A Symphony of Light". Watch as thousands of buildings across the waterfront illuminate the skyline, emitting radiant beams towards the night sky, all choreographed to a harmonic blend of Western and Oriental music that echoes across the thriving metropolis.

This stunning light show is absolutely free. To ensure the best experience, find a comfortable spot along the waterfront before the 15-minute spectacle commences. For a closer view, consider hopping on a harbour cruise that offers lounge beds and wine service.
