A visit to Hong Kong is incomplete without experiencing Dai Pai Dong, the popular cooked food stalls known for their lively atmosphere, delectable cuisine, and affordability. Tung Po, located in Wan Chai, is the premier destination for this unique food and entertainment experience.
Tung Po offers an extensive selection of Cantonese classics, from soups to stir-fries. The menu includes traditional dishes like marinated cold cuts, as well as innovative fusion creations such as shrimp in orange sauce with yellow curry and squid ink pasta.
The hallmark of a distinguished Dai Pai Dong is the quality of its seafood dishes, an area in which Tung Po consistently excels. Guests can either bring their own seafood or select live catch from the restaurant's offerings, which the kitchen will then prepare to their preference. Popular choices include steamed scallops with garlic and glass vermicelli, storm shelter-styled mantis shrimp, and fried shrimp coated in salted egg yolk, which pairs well with beer.
Beer at Tung Po is served in small bowls, with waitresses constantly refilling them, ensuring guests never see the bottom. As the evening progresses (usually after 9 p.m.), the restaurant owner Robby makes an appearance, sporting his signature silver mohawk and animated expressions, while performing a variety of entertaining stunts. He mingles with guests, singing, dancing, and even engaging in friendly dance battles that showcase his moonwalk and jazz splits.
In an unexpected turn of events, the renowned 30-year-old restaurant was forced to leave the cooked food center in September 2022. Hundreds of people, both foreigners and locals, gathered at the restaurant to bid a heartfelt farewell during its final days at the beloved original location. Fear not! Tung Po has since reopened in a nearby North Point location, ensuring its cherished legacy lives on.
