Nestled within the winding roads of rural Tai Po, a commanding white figure gradually unveils itself - an imposing monolith, much like a towering Red Oak tree, that is impossible to ignore. This colossal statue is the 76-meter tall bronze representation of Guan Yin (觀音), nestled within the confines of Tsz Shan Monastery. As one of the most revered Buddhist deities, Guan Yin embodies the essence of mercy and protection, often portrayed as a young woman in flowing robes (in fact, he is a man!), adorning a royal bead necklace, and bearing a jar of pure water along with a willow branch.
Taking 12 years to construct and finally opened in 2015, Tsz Shan Monastery (慈山寺) was established by Li Ka Shing (李嘉誠), known as the wealthiest man in Hong Kong. The Tang dynasty style monastery spans 46,000 sqm, and was created to spread and research the teachings of Buddhism, and to act as a spiritual sanctuary. Tranquility and quiet elegance is found everywhere as you take a stroll in the compound and explore the Maitreya Hall (天王殿) in which sits three golden buddhas. Also check out the Buddhist Art Museum which houses over 100 Buddha statues, 43 original Dunhuang sutras, or medieval texts. It runs meditation retreats, Buddhist readings, and workshops on traditional Chinese tea as well as zen (禪) calligraphy.
Before planning your visit, please note that Tsz Shan Monastery restricts daily visitor numbers to 400, necessitating online booking well in advance; it's not uncommon for reservations to be booked a month ahead due to high demand. Also, ensure to dress respectfully, avoiding sleeveless tops or short bottoms. If needed, the Monastery can provide a wrap for you.
Another detail to keep in mind is the considerable distance between the Tai Po Market MTR Station and Tsz Shan Monastery. It is recommended to take a mini-bus from Tai Po Market Station Minu-bus Terminus (near MTR Station Exit B). Opt for either mini-bus 20B or 20C, which will bring you to Tung Tsz Road, or choose 20T, which makes a stop directly at the monastery entrance.
