HONG KONG TRANSPORTATION
THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO GETTING AROUND

Hong Kong is known for its highly developed transportation system, which is convenient and accessible for both locals and tourists. Here's a breakdown of the various modes of transportation available in Hong Kong and some helpful tips for each.

MTR & Airport Express

The MTR is a cheap option for traveling around Hong Kong, with fares ranging from HKD 5 to HKD 15 depending on the distance traveled. The MTR's East Rail Line and High Speed Rail also provide easy access to China. Be sure to purchase an Octopus card, which makes traveling on the MTR and other modes of transportation more convenient.

Taxi

Taxis are more expensive compared to other forms of transportation in Hong Kong, but they still offer relatively cheap fares compared to other countries around the world. In Hong Kong, there are three different colors of taxis, used to distinguish their operating areas, including red (Urban Taxi), blue (Lantau Island Taxi), and green (New Territories Taxi).Taking a taxi in Hong Kong is generally convenient, whether you're using an online platform such as Uber or flagging one down on the road. Further, e-payments are widely accepted, making transactions smooth. However, if you're planning to cross Victoria Harbour, from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island or vice versa, you may encounter some resistance. Despite regulations, there's a high chance the driver might refuse your request. While you have the right to insist, be prepared that it might take some extra time and potentially lead to a heated discussion, as drivers can sometimes be impatient.

The red urban taxi is the most expensive option, but can take you anywhere in Hong Kong. It's seen as a symbol of Hong Kong due to its ubiquity and distinctive color.
