OCTOPUS CARD
NAVIGATING HONG KONG WITH EASE

The Octopus card, Hong Kong's prevalent electronic payment system, simplifies various daily activities. Use this flexible tool for transportation like airport express, metro (MTR), tram, bus, and minibus or at numerous dining spots, including Starbucks and 7-11. Popular tourist locations such as The Peak Tram and Star Ferry also accept this handy method of payment.

The Octopus card takes its name from the marine creature, mirroring the eight tentacles in its Chinese name (八達通). The number eight corresponds to the cardinal and ordinal directions in Chinese culture, symbolizing "reachable in all directions". In Cantonese, eight (八達) is associated with wealth (發達), which explains the infinity symbol in the Octopus card logo, resembling the lucky number eight.

Spot the infinity symbol scanners at stores for easy Octopus card usage. These widespread scanners indicate the acceptance of the Octopus card for payments. Enquire at the cash counter to confirm if the shop accepts the Octopus card when unsure.

Purchase a standard Octopus card at any MTR station Customer Service Center except the Racecourse station. Avoid pre-paid Octopus cards from convenience stores or tourist cards (1-day or 3-days) as these are costlier. Instead, opt for the standard Octopus card for cost-saving.

An adult Octopus card costs HK$150, including a HK$50 deposit and HK$100 initial stored value. Child and elder Octopus cards cost HK$70, including a HK$50 deposit and HK$20 initial stored value. Children aged 3-11 and seniors over 65 are eligible for the child and elder Octopus cards, respectively. Elder Octopus cardholders benefit from a concessionary fare of HK$2 per trip on MTR, buses, ferries, and green minibusses.

The refundable Octopus card allows the collection of the HK$50 deposit and any remaining stored value at any MTR station Customer Service Center. However, a handling fee of HK$11 is charged for refunds made within 90 days of the issue date.

Even with the handling fee, the Octopus card proves to be a wise choice as single ride ticket fares are higher than those paid by the Octopus card. The fare difference, up to HK$9 for suburban areas in Hong Kong, and the convenience of not requiring change on other public transportation modes like buses and trams make the Octopus card a valuable travel companion. Enjoy the numerous advantages of the Octopus card throughout Hong Kong.
