TAI O HERITAGE HOTEL
STAY AT A HISTORIC HERITAGE SITE TO EXPERIENCE HONG KONG'S COLONIAL LEGACY

The Tai O Heritage Hotel, a Grade II listed historic building, is perched on the hillside of Shek Tsai Po Street. This former police station from the British colonial era has been meticulously restored, showcasing classic colonial design elements that meld Western and Chinese architectural styles. Its arched façades, corridors, and Chinese sloping tiled roofs provide an exceptional feeling of tranquility, with views overlooking the shores that are perfect for capturing countless sunset pictures.

In 1898, the British acquired the New Territories from China, with Lantau Island included in the agreement. Tai O was seen as a strategic land border to promote trade activities in the region, a strategy that proved effective until the 1950s.

During this time, millions of people attempted to cross the border into Hong Kong after China became a communist country in 1949. Some chose to come to Hong Kong through Tai O, but the marine police were unable to catch them while they were still in the sea, as they were technically still in China. This led to the expansion of the Tai O police station in the 50s and 60s to accommodate the additional workload.

Today, the Tai O Heritage Hotel is recognized by many international organizations, including UNESCO, for its cultural preservation efforts. The 9-room boutique hotel is perfect for an overnight stay if you want to fully immerse yourself in Tai O's history and culture. Each room offers a view of the entire bay and has a unique story to tell about its past purpose. The dining area, Tai O Lookout, is beautifully decorated with signature glass roofs and colonial interior, making it an excellent spot for a romantic dinner. Rates are comparable to those of 4-star hotels in Hong Kong, starting at HKD 1,400 per night, with package deals that include meals.

If you want to explore the natural surroundings, take a hike around Fu Shan (虎山) for breathtaking views of the South China Sea. You may even spot some pink dolphins from the viewing point, although this is not guaranteed since the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge was built.

If you're staying in Tai O, we highly recommend a visit to Man Cheung Po, a fantastic spot for hiking and getting some Instagram-worthy shots.
