Old Peak Road is widely regarded as the world's most expensive trail, featuring mansions scattered throughout the mountain that easily cost more than HKD 100 million (over USD 13 million). While the houses may seem implausibly unaffordable, you can still catch a glimpse of these opulent properties and share in the same stunning vista.
However, the root cause of this extreme wealth disparity lies in government policy. Hong Kong maintains low tax rates for businesses, heavily relying on house prices to provide additional income. As a result, many locals are forced to live in cramped and inhumane conditions, such as cage houses.
Built in 1920, Old Peak Road is older than any living person, but it still remains home to many millionaires today. In the early days of Hong Kong, before automobiles and trams, the only way to reach The Peak was on foot. Wealthy British residents hired porters, known as "collies," to carry them up the mountain in sedan chairs, while commoners ascended on foot.
In 1881, the tram project was initiated, providing a faster way to The Peak for officers, soldiers, and the wealthy (excluding Chinese residents). Shortly after, Old Peak Road appeared as a shorter walking route. In 1923, the new motor route, now named Peak Road, was completed, allowing for people drive up the mountain.
Nowadays, Old Peak Road is primarily used as a short trail for locals and tourists to burn off some calories while enjoying nature. Lined with trees, the trail only offers glimpses of the city until reaching the top. Be sure to stop by Barker Road Station, the best-preserved station in Hong Kong, and a popular spot for pre-wedding photoshoots.
If you prefer not to take the Peak tram or bus no.15 to reach the Peak, consider Old Peak Road instead. This route offers a chance to get some exercise while enjoying the scenic surroundings. Depending on your physical fitness level, the walk from Old Peak Road to the Peak can take between 30 minutes to one hour. To reach Old Peak Road, simply cross Garden Road from the Peak Tram Lower Terminus, walk uphill along the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens, turn right on Robinson Road, and you'll find Old Peak Road on your left-hand side.
