Rare for visitors to see, Yau Ma Tei Fruit Market is nevertheless a unique, vibrant place full of beauty and stories.
This century-old market started in 1913 and, from the 1920s, the government granted fruit vendors space on the reclaimed land in Yau Ma Tei, constructing buildings that make up today's market. A visit will reveal two- or three-story stone buildings and old trees that have grown into the structures. Recognized as a grade II historic site by the government, the market's nostalgic charm even attracts couples for wedding photoshoots.
The market was able to load in fruits shipped by vessel and smaller boats as it was located right by the sea. But due to another phrase of landfill, the shoreline was pushed 3km away so the market relies on truck for fruit delivery. And the one and only fruit market no longer remained the city’s only source of fruit, after the rise of supermarkets, hotels, and convenient stores which have their own source of import. Still, today, the fruit market contributes up to 50% of our vitamin C intake.
Operating day and night, the market serves retail during the day. After sunset, it transforms into a bustling wholesale market, busiest around midnight. This nocturnal operation ensures the freshness of the fruits for retailers to sell the following day and helps to avoid overloading the city's transport system with large fruit deliveries.
It is a gritty place where you can see a real, vibrant scene of Hong Kong. Go have a look. Try some exotic fruits and find a spot for your best photoshoot.
