BAK BO TONG (SHAM SHU PO)
SAVOR THE TRADITIONAL HERBAL REMEDIES OF HONG KONG

Established in 1981 on Temple Street, Yau Ma Tei, Bak Bo Tong has been a staple for the locals for nearly four decades. Back in the day, herbal tea shops, including Bak Bo Tong, would lure in the youth and dating couples with jukeboxes or TVs. In the '60s and '70s, when medical facilities were not as widespread, Hongkongers leaned on herbal tea, revered for its healing properties, especially after indulgent meals to find balance. Bak Bo Tong stands out with its signature massive copper Wu Lou (銅葫蘆) and rows of black jelly in ceramic bowls.

But as modern medicine became mainstream and the younger generation pursued other careers, these traditional herbal tea shops became rare. Today, few such places remain, with Bak Bo Tong being a proud testament to this legacy where visitors can still taste the herbal tea crafted from formulas rooted in Chinese medicine from 40 years ago.

The age-old recipe for Guilinggao, often referred to as Turtle Jelly, incorporates over 20 medicinal ingredients. Contrary to its name, it doesn't contain turtle meat but utilizes tortoise shell and licorice. These ingredients are traditionally believed to address muscle and bone discomfort, soothe coughs, relieve diarrhea, and aid in detoxification and dampness removal. Honey or syrup can be added to softene the natural herbal bitter taste.
