Though you are not supposed to sit here for long because it is Cha Chaan Teng, people do come back every day for this no-frills sandwich as if they have never tired of it. So maybe you should come and try it yourself.
Sun Heung Yuen (新香園) has been famous for its egg and beef sandwich for more than half a century. The recipe is as simple as it can be: scrambled eggs with marinated beef (they use slice beef rather than minced beef) sandwiched in two slices of bread. But they just can make it magic that the scrambled eggs are fluffy, smooth, and moist while the juicy beef adds in extra savoriness. Remember to say “Hong Dai” (烘底) as you order to have your bread toasted. That’s an additional $1 worth of spending.
Founded in 1968, this classic old-school Cha Chaan Teng is well-known from within the neighbourhood of Sham Shui Po to Instagram nowadays. So expect people queuing during lunch hours - and even late at night. The eatery used to open 24 hours, which is probably the best place to go when you stay nearby and hunger kicks in after midnight. Unfortunately, following the COVID-19, they shortened their operating hours.
Sun Heung Yuen, like other small Cha Chaan Teng, serves also noodles and snacks. If you are into trying good-old-fashion Cantonese flavour, you might love their pork trotter noodles (豬手麵) which is another signature loved by the locals. Stewed in brine for long hours, the skin and tendon of the pork trotter are as flavorful as it is soft and smooth that it melts in your mouth and gives you a facelift after (at least that’s what we believe).
