HAPPY VALLEY RACECOURSE
A SPORT, GAMBLE, AND LIFESTYLE

What sport do the British love the most? Football? Hunting? Some say it’s horse racing. Their enthusiasm led to the establishment of a racecourse in Hong Kong during the early years of colonization. Since the start of official betting for horse racing in 1891, interest has grown exponentially. Wednesday night in Happy Valley is more than betting, it’s also a kind of lifestyle not to be missed, giving “Happy Friday” a little twist.

Wanna watch a breathtaking race?

Join in on one of Hong Kong's most thrilling and popular sporting events with these helpful tips:

  1. Races are usually held every Wednesday night from September to mid-July. Make sure to check the race schedule on the official website, especially for special events like Oktorberfest, French Night.
  2. Enter from the Public Entrance (Entrance G). You can either take a tram or taxi from Causeway Bay. The admission fee is HK$10, come at 7 pm to enjoy a full night.
  3. Start the night by grabbing a beer and snacks at the Beer Garden. Take in the panoramic view of the racecourse, surrounded by high-rise residential buildings.
  4. Horse racing is a sport after all, not pure gambling. Trust your gut and look for the horse with the winning vibe and bet on it at the Parade Ring. There are over 20 types of bet. (Check out with the staff nearby if you are confused, they are all very friendly!) Each bet could be as low as HK$10 and you may wish to wait until the last minute to place the bet to get a better idea of the final odds.
  5. Here comes the most exciting bit after placing the bet. Choose a spot near the end of the track and cheerlead for your pick, win some cash and redeem it at the betting hall!

Ending at 2300 is too early? You may as well head to Wan Chai Red Light District for the Ladies Night, it’s only a 10 minutes drive away.

Please bear in mind, under 18 are not allowed on race day. But you can still check out the Hong Kong Racing Museum, on 2/F of the stands, to learn more about the history of horse racing in Hong Kong.
