CHUN YEUNG STREET PHOTOGRAPHY GUIDE
EXPERIENCE THE OLD HONG KONG'S SOUL: HOW TO CAPTURE AUTHENTIC HONG KONG LIFE

Chun Yeung Street

Experience the essence of old Hong Kong at Chun Yeung Street. Often likened to Taiwan's Shifen or Hanoi's urban railway, it's a unique urban landscape rich with history and cultural diversity. As a haven for Hokkienese and Shanghainese products, it's fondly known as "Little Hokkien" or "Little Shanghai". A must-visit destination, every snapshot taken here captures a moment of authentic Hong Kong life.

Photography Guide

Equipment

  • A mid- to long-focus lens (50mm or above) will come in handy.
  • A telephoto lens allows shots from a distance, minimizing inconvenience to others.

Shooting Tips

  • Genre: Try street photography, capturing unchoreographed incidents in public spaces.
  • Subjects: Both sides of the railway and stalls can offer interesting photographic subjects.
  • People: Be mindful of people's reactions and stop if they appear displeased.
  • Highlighting Trams: To emphasize trams in your images, use a large aperture and a telephoto lens for depth and a sense of compression.
  • Camera Settings: Use manual mode or aperture-priority mode. A faster shutter speed will enable sharp images of moving trams.

Phone Shooting

Even though my iPhone XR has a fixed focal length of 28mm, it doesn't limit your photography potential. Use leading lines in your surroundings, and leverage the wide-angle lens to capture expansive shots. If your smartphone offers multiple focal lengths, you're in for an enjoyable experience, experimenting with different perspectives at Chun Yeung Street. So, don't let your phone's limitations hold you back. Capture the magic in every frame!
