NAVIGATING TYPHOON SEASON IN HONG KONG

Tropical cyclones are relatively common in Hong Kong during typhoon season, which lasts from May to early November, with the peak season occurring between July and September. This is due to Hong Kong's location within the sub-tropical region. To warn the public of potential threats posed by strong winds, the Hong Kong Observatory developed a tropical cyclone warning signal system.

Although typhoons are frequent in Hong Kong during peak season, they are generally weaker than those experienced in the United States. For example, the strongest typhoons in Hong Kong are classified as Hurricanes (Signal 10) with wind speeds reaching 118 km/h, while Category One hurricanes in the US have wind speeds ranging from 119 to 153 km/h. Consequently, there is less need for concern about personal safety during a typhoon while visiting Hong Kong.

The tropical cyclone signals in Hong Kong and their meanings are as follows:

Signal 1

A tropical cyclone is centered within approximately 800 km of Hong Kong and may affect the territory. Life goes on as usual; carry an umbrella.

Signal 3

Strong winds are blowing or expected to blow near sea level in Hong Kong, with sustained speeds of 41-62 km/h and gusts potentially exceeding 100 km/h. Life goes on as usual; carry an umbrella. Some attractions like Ngong Ping 360 may close earlier, so it is advised to confirm their business hours before departing.

Typhoon Warning Signal 3

Signal 8

Gale or storm-force winds are blowing or expected to blow near sea level in Hong Kong, with sustained speeds of 63-117 km/h and gusts potentially exceeding 180 km/h. Most transportation and businesses will likely close. If outdoors, return to your hotel as soon as possible, and plan to stay indoors for the remainder of the day.

Typhoon Warning Signal 8

Signal 9

Gale or storm-force winds are increasing or expected to increase significantly in strength. The conditions are similar to Signal 8.

Signal 10

Hurricane-force winds are blowing or expected to blow with sustained speeds of 118 km/h or above, and gusts potentially exceeding 220 km/h. The conditions are similar to Signal 8.

For public safety, when a tropical cyclone signal of 8 or above is hoisted in Hong Kong, public transportation such as buses, minibuses, trams, and ferries may be suspended, and restaurants and shops may temporarily close. Some attractions like Ngong Ping 360 may close earlier, even under Signal 3 conditions. It is recommended to contact the company for verification before visiting.

Travel insurance typically does not cover injuries or losses caused by adverse weather. As such, it is strongly advised to stay indoors when a tropical cyclone signal of 8 or above is issued.
