UNDERSTANDING HONG KONG'S RAINSTORM WARNING SYSTEM
AMBER, RED, AND BLACK SIGNALS

During the rainy season in Hong Kong, which spans from April to September, heavy rainfall can be expected. The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has developed a Rainstorm Warning System to inform citizens of rain intensity and minimize potential harm. The system includes three levels: Amber, Red, and Black.

Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal

An Amber Rainstorm Warning indicates that heavy rain exceeding 30 millimeters per hour is either occurring or anticipated in Hong Kong. Under this warning, daily life continues as usual, but individuals are advised to carry an umbrella. To monitor the situation, consult the rainstorm radar here.

Red Rainstorm Warning Signal

A Red Rainstorm Warning signifies that heavy rain exceeding 50 millimeters per hour is either occurring or anticipated in Hong Kong. This level of rainfall may disrupt some services, particularly those involving outdoor activities. Seek shelter if caught outside, and track the rainstorm radar to determine whether it is safe to venture outdoors.

Black Rainstorm Warning Signal

A Black Rainstorm Warning indicates very heavy rain exceeding 70 millimeters per hour, either occurring or anticipated in Hong Kong. Under this warning, it is strongly recommended to stay indoors, as services involving outdoor activities will likely be suspended. If caught outside, seek shelter and monitor the rainstorm radar to assess when it is safe to leave.

Please be aware that attractions like Ocean Park might close during Rainstorm weather signals. Confirm the operating hours with the attraction before setting out. Additionally, travel insurance typically does not cover injuries or losses due to inclement weather. It is highly advised to remain indoors when Red or Black Rainstorm warnings are issued. For up-to-date weather information in Hong Kong, download the Hong Kong Observatory app (MyObservatory) or visit their website. Stay safe!
