INTRODUCING HONG KONG STYLE BARBEQUE (BBQ)
EMBRACE THE LOCAL FLAVORS AND BARBEQUE TRADITIONS

Barbeque is a universally beloved activity, and Hong Kong is no exception. It serves as a school tour, family gathering, and social event, but the locals have their unique way of barbequing.

Plenty of public and free barbeque sites are conveniently located at the entrances of country parks, hiking trails, and even along the shoreline, such as the Tai Mei Tuk Barbecue Area. All you need to bring are basic equipment like forks, charcoal, and food, which can be easily found at nearby supermarkets or shops.

First, you will come to learn a life skill - setting up a fire. Use a BBQ charcoal starter (炭精) to ignite the first spark, and ensure proper ventilation to keep the charcoal burning nearby. This process may take up to an hour for inexperienced individuals. Once the fire is lit, it's time to start barbequing.

Instead of leaving the food directly on the stove, locals use U-shaped long forks to secure the food and cook it together over the fire. It can be a bit tricky to keep the food in place, but try running the fork from one end to the other, ensuring it turns evenly before placing it on the stove. Popular barbeque food includes chicken wings, squid, fishballs, sausages, and various types of balls. To add extra flavor, apply a layer of honey and grill it for a few more minutes before enjoying.

In recent years, paid BBQ sites like White Head BBQ have become more common. These sites offer food at an all-you-can-eat rate and provide assistance with fire setup. Simply pre-book a spot and enjoy a hassle-free experience.
